Reflection of MPU Personal Development

First and foremost, I had identified my own strengths and weaknesses. I've promised myself to make use of my strength and overcome my weakness in order to succeed in the future. Besides, I've also learnt how to be a independent learner. I learnt how to write posts for my blog, put up some simple presentations and so on.

Not to forget that I'm widely exposed to the technology world in the programme. Lots of new apps were introduced to us, such as Popplet, Edmodo, ShowMe and PowToon. In this era of globalization, it is certainly important to have basic knowledge in technology field in order to compete and survive in this competitive world.

Moreover, everyone needs friends. During the MPU classes, I was assigned to group 1, Insurgent. I met new friends and people from other classes. In addition, I actually interviewed friends from different groups and classes as an assignment to discover their learning styles. I'm a proven introvert and I'm glad that I became a little more sociable from this programme.

Last but not least, throughout all the activities that were done in class, I could actually have a clearer picture regarding my ideal career. This happened after I had done the career test. People around me often tell me that it is not easy to have a clear view of your future, but the career test shown that I own certain qualities which are beneficial in the future. Even though I still haven't made up my mind, but at least I have a better and clearer mindset for now.  I may not know what dreams do I have, but I'm pretty sure that I'll find it in no time.

Thank you MPU!

S.W.O.T

What is S.W.O.T?

- Strength
- Weakness
- Opportunities
- Threats

 Aims of SWOT:
 -Reveal your competitive advantages
-Analyze your prospects for personal development
 -Prepare yourself for problems
-Allow for the development of contingency plans

Past vs Present

Today's topic hits me real hard, Reflection. When i think about it, i have never been reflecting on myself for a long period of time. So now, i'll reflect about my life in secondary school.

I was a school prefect for 5 years time. I was elected by the teacher to be the committee member of the prefectorial board at 2014. I was very surprised as i didn't know my capabilities were above average as the prefects team was not weak at all. Initially, i'm fired up as this is the first time and the last time to serve in the prefectorial board. I held on school rules strictly and gave my best at accomplishing jobs. Soon, i find it tiring to deal with all the restrictions. Short break times, long duty hours, missing classes often annoyed me a lot. In the end, devils won over angels in my mind game. I started to become lazy, irresponsible and disobey rules.

Prefects are so called the role- model for all the students. My silly actions had been affecting the image of the whole board. Discipline teachers and my fellow committee members called up a meeting to discuss about my attitude. I was criticised in the meeting. They said, even a chosen leader could not follow orders, what about the others? I was stunned, not because i was being scolded, but i realized that i'm really going off track. Teachers had faith on me so they chose me. And my immature actions disappointed them.

After that incident, i reverted back to how i used to be. No more excuses for me to not carry out my duties. Until now, i'm glad that i changed in a good way. I truly appreciate the efforts my fellow committees and teachers put on me, helping me to get back on a right track.

Thinking back, I've gained a life lesson to make myself a better person. I've learnt how to be organized and responsible when you're given a task. Slacking off and procrastinate are the worst attitude one's have while trying to accomplish a task. As a next step, I'll never forgot the lesson i learnt in my form 5 life. This would always remind me to be a responsible guy no matter in what situation.

Ways of Learning

I was introduced to VAK Learning Styles by my MPU lecturer today. Below are some informations about it:

VAK Learning Styles Explanation
The VAK learning styles model suggests that most people can be divided into one of three preferred styles of learning. These three styles are as follows, (and there is no right or wrong learning style):

  • Someone with a Visual learning style has a preference for seen or observed things, including pictures, diagrams, demonstrations, displays, handouts, films, flip-chart, etc. These people will use phrases such as ‘show me’, ‘let’s have a look at that’ and will be best able to perform a new task after reading the instructions or watching someone else do it first. These are the people who will work from lists and written directions and instructions.
  • Someone with an Auditory learning style has a preference for the transfer of information through listening: to the spoken word, of self or others, of sounds and noises. These people will use phrases such as ‘tell me’, ‘let’s talk it over’ and will be best able to perform a new task after listening to instructions from an expert. These are the people who are happy being given spoken instructions over the telephone, and can remember all the words to songs that they hear!
  • Someone with a Kinaesthetic learning style has a preference for physical experience - touching, feeling, holding, doing, practical hands-on experiences. These people will use phrases such as ‘let me try’, ‘how do you feel?’ and will be best able to perform a new task by going ahead and trying it out, learning as they go. These are the people who like to experiment, hands-on, and never look at the instructions first!

People commonly have a main preferred learning style, but this will be part of a blend of all three. Some people have a very strong preference; other people have a more even mixture of two or less commonly, three styles.

When you know your preferred learning style(s) you understand the type of learning that best suits you. This enables you to choose the types of learning that work best for you.

For me, I'm the Auditory learning type. I prefer listening than reading. I can actually understands certain topic better when there is someone who explains it to me face-to-face. I usually find facts and theories from textbooks dull and uninteresting. So when i encounter problems in studies, i like to seek helps from lecturers and friends rather than finding it from textbook. I believe that we can only understand certain things when we speak it out loud, and i guess this applied unconsciously in my studies.

Besides, i have friends with different learning style, such as:

Yee Zer Khai is a Visual Learner. He prefers pictures, diagrams, handouts and charts. He says that he can understand the lesson better by jotting down the important points that the lecturers teach and revise it afterwards. His notes are always full of colours as he finds it better to memorize colourful notes than black and white words.

Lew Huey Hee's learning style is Kinaesthetic. She loves learning new things by experiencing first before understanding the theory from textbooks. She also prefers practical or hands on learning than just theoretical. During lab sessions, she is always enthusiastic as she can learn the topics with all her senses - sight, touch, taste, smell, hearing.

From this lecture, i understand that there is no right or wrong learning style. The point is that there are types of learning that are right for your own preferred learning style. I'm glad that i know my learning style today so that i can perform better in the future.

Personality Test

I have completed the personality test.

Jungian/Myers-Briggs Personality Type is based on four preferences, that when combined produce personality type. This page will first cover your scores for each of the preferences then finally give a description for the type that they produce.

When combined, that makes your personality type INFP. A detailed description of this personality type is below.

According to Myers-Briggs, INFPs focus much of their energy on an inner world dominated by intense feeling and deeply held ethics. They seek an external life that is in keeping with these values. Loyal to the people and causes important to them, INFPs can quickly spot opportunities to implement their ideals. They are curious to understand those around them, and so are accepting and flexible except when their values are threatened.

According to Keirsey, based on observations of behavior, notable INFPs may include Princess Diana, George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, Audrey Hepburn, Richard Gere, Albert Schweitzer and Isabel Myers.

The polite, reserved exterior of INFPs can at first make them difficult to get to know. They enjoy conversation, however, taking particular delight in the unusual. When INFPs are in a sociable mood, their humor and charm shine through. Disposed to like people and to avoid conflict, INFPs tend to make pleasant company.

Devoted to those in their inner circle, INFPs guard the emotional well-being of others, consoling those in distress. Guided by their desire for harmony, INFPs prefer to be flexible unless their ethics are violated. Then, they become passionate advocates for their beliefs. They are often able to sway the opinions of others through tact, diplomacy, and an ability to see varying sides of an issue.

INFPs develop these insights through reflection, and they require substantial time alone to ponder and process new information. While they can be quite patient with complex material, they are generally bored by routine. Though not always organized, INFPs are meticulous about things they value. Perfectionists, they may have trouble completing a task because it cannot meet their high standards. They may even go back to a completed project after the deadline so they can improve it.

INFPs are creative types and often have a gift for language. As introverts, they may prefer to express themselves through writing. Their dominant Feeling drives their desire to communicate, while their auxiliary intuition supplies the imagination. Having a talent for symbolism, they enjoy metaphors and similes. They continually seek new ideas and adapt well to change. They prefer working in an environment that values these gifts and allows them to make a positive difference in the world, according to their personal beliefs.

INFPs generally have the following traits:

  • Strong value systems
  • Warmly interested in people
  • Service-oriented, usually putting the needs of others above their own
  • Loyal and devoted to people and causes
  • Future-oriented
  • Growth-oriented; always want to be growing in a positive direction
  • Creative and inspirational
  • Flexible and laid-back, unless a ruling principle is violated
  • Sensitive and complex
  • Dislike dealing with details and routine work
  • Original and individualistic - "out of the mainstream"
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Prefer to work alone, and may have problems working on teams
  • Value deep and authentic relationships
  • Want to be seen and appreciated for who they are

Possible Career Paths for the INFP:

After understanding the concept of TGC, my group, Insurgent had constructed a mind map to prove that TGC is related to our daily life. For instance, in our studies.

From the mind map, we can tell that Biology is intimately related with TGC. Some may thinks that Biology is a subject for those who want to pursuit their career in Health Science fields. This is not true. We can actually furnish up ourselves and be prepared to face the world with all the life skills we obtained through learning Biology.
